CLARKE COUNTY HISTORY
The town of Osceola was named to honor the great Seminole Indian leader who died in 1838 at the age of 34.
Osceola rose to prominence among the Seminoles and led warriors who denounced treaties calling for the removal of the Seminoles from Florida to the West.
Overtures for peace were sent to Osceola and he agreed to meet with General Jesup under a white flag. The general, never intending to discuss peace, seized and imprisoned Osceola at Fort Moultrie, S.C., where he died shortly afterward. The action against Osceola was so upsetting to Americans that dozens of towns, counties, lakes and mountains are named in his honor.
A memorial statue of Osceola is located at Highway 34 and South Ridge Road.
